In the Present integrates the work of Jenny Walton and Alexandra Zealand who both grapple with thoughts of human life and its evolving relationships to the world. Though quite different in their materials, each artist’s work relates to the natural world in its present state, through abstracted anatomy caught in the act of degeneration or through repetitive looping reminiscent of cellular structures

suddenspace was a great success! Thanks to all those that attended.
The In Between - Jenny Walton - Monotype 2009 33" x 60"
The-In-Between, 2009 Monotype 33" x 60"

The show looked great and Liz Tunick from the National Gallery of Art wrote about my work! She was incredibly kind in her review. A tidbit is below.
"Jenny Walton’s magnificent monotypes, untitled (60″ x 36″), Fluidity (60″x 33″) and The In Between (60″ x 36″). They caught my eye for more than their size, though a height of five feet – only 2” shorter than the artist, I learned – certainly helped announce them as the tours de force I found them to be."

I'm back in the studio working on a new series that I'm really excited about. I hope to share more soon. I wish you all the best during the holidays and new year and hope to see you soon!

    Exciting new Exhibitions!

    Whew!

It's been hopping in the studio lately. The Open Studio went well and many thanks to those that came. I'm getting ready for several shows, one of which opens this week.

I'm super EXCITED about suddenspace. A Pop-Up gallery in 5,000 square feet of raw space featuring 19 of the best emerging artists around. The works in the show are truly incredible and I'm honored to be a part of the show. For the first time ever, I got to see my largest monotypes (5 feet tall and seen below) side by side on display. It was a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. suddenspace has an accompanying website and will have several events for you to attend.

However, I would really love to see you at the

    Invitation, Upcoming Exhibitions, & News

It's been a busy couple months with lots of changes! The fall season is in full swing with lots of things coming up to keep me busy. I've been priviledged to start teaching as well. I currently have 5(!) classes and am enjoying every single one of them. Between all my classes my students range in ages from 10 to senior citizens with lots of newly minted adults in the middle. It's a huge change in my day jobs, but something I have whole-heartedly embraced and love.

First things first though, it's time to let everyone in to my studio to see all the work I've been working on. I've been included in several shows and also was convinced to write about my work on something other than an artist statement. You'll find all the information below. As always, I would love to hear how you are doing as well.

You are cordially invited to my

The editor's of Bourgeon Online Magazine have been asking me for some time to write about my work and my process for the "In Their Own Words" column. I finally capitulated, sat down, and wrote. It was hard discussing it all in one place. You can read the results here.

    Process Revealed

    left handed #5 Watercolor 5"x 7"

I have been asked for quite some time from the editors over at Bourgeon Magazine to write about my work "in my own words." They finally convinced me to do so. You can find the article here.

I can't say it was easy writing about my work in a way that is meant to be anything other than an artist statement. However, I'm glad I did. It gave me a little bit of insight on my own life and work process over the last year and gave me some clarity in the events that have been taking place.

    Exhibitions & News

Hi! It's been some time. I just wanted to let you know that I'm in two exhibitions currently. If you are in the DC Area, please stop by and check the work out. I've been working in the studio on some new work and also challenging myself by training my left hand while recovering from a right arm injury. It's been great and offers a new way of working and thinking. Some of the left handed paintings are in the DCAC show (below). You can also see them on my Facebook Artist Page (link on bottom). I wish you all happiness and health! Jenny

    William Kentridge

    William Kentridge:
MOMA has an exhibition up of William Kentridge right now. It has a really cool interactive web presence. For someone surfing in bed that can't make it to the exhibition they only make me drool more. You can watch videos, interviews, explore the themes, and get a very good sense of his work. However, if you can make it in person, don't delay.

I really love his work for its innovation and process. Please check out the link above and find out for yourself!

    Re-assessment

Just 32 days ago I had major surgery. I've been recovering at home after 5 days in the hospital. Recovering is a full time job. Managing all the people that are supposed to be helping you and making sure that you get your needs met is hard.

I have tried to do some drawing while I'm laying around recovering. I have to say that it's tough. Frida my hat is off to you. It's very tough, though I'll admit to zoning in front of the tv and Netflix, with some guilt. I'm still on the mend and I'm still trying.

I hope the new year is treating you well. I'm looking at getting back into the studio and concentrating on new work. In the meantime, I'd like to invite you to my next show, which based on the flash presentation on UMUC's site (View show information), the curators did an excellent job selecting some AMAZING artists. I feel privileged to hang among them.

I hope to see you at the opening, or if you can't make it, the gallery has extended hours (see below).
