You are invited to join George Mason University and the Arlington County community to celebrate the grand opening of Founders Hall Gallery. The inaugural exhibit is curated by artist/independent curator Lisa McCarty and will feature new, specially-created works on the theme "New Beginnings" by Arlington and DC artists:

"New Beginnings is an exhibition featuring D.C. and Virginia based artists who have embarked on projects that break new ground within their own particular working methods or attempts to alter their trajectory as artists. Deborah Carroll Anzinger, Reuben Breslar, Treva Elwood, M. Gert Barkovic and Jenny Walton will all exhibit new work that they hope will lead them to a new beginnings within their practices. Some shifts are conceptual, others material, but each work is a conscious attempt to change course, either out of necessity or shear curiosity." –Lisa McCarty

The Gallery in Founders Hall is intended to engage the arts, the artists and the diverse audience of professional students, graduate level faculty and professional society in an exchange of ideas and practice.

Visitor parking is available at the Founders Hall garage (currently only Visa or Mastercard credit card payments are accepted).
To access the Founders Hall garage, use the alley behind Founders Hall, turning off either Kirkwood Drive (between Hazel Hall and Truland Building) or Washington Boulevard at the traffic signal between Giant and GMU Foundation Building (come down the hill and go past the GMUF garage and the Original Building loading dock).
Off-campus Parking
Metered parking is available on the surrounding streets. There is also a parking lot down the street (on Herndon St), which is quite reasonable at $5 and open until 11PM and just a few minutes walk to Truland and Founders Hall.

Back to the studio!

As some of you may know I’ve been taking some time off from the studio lately to get a brand spanking new knee. The great news is, it works!!!! I’m truly enjoying feeling nearly normal again and walking like I haven’t been able to in years. My favorite part, passing people on the sidewalk; because I have places to go! One of the places is certainly back into the studio and using all that thinking time effectively.

Right now one of the things I’m working on is The Humor Project, a new community based work that explores the relationship between healing and humor. I need your help and input!! I’ll be working in new media and utilizing collected jokes. This is where you come in:

It's been awhile since I sent an update out. There has been a lot going on in the studio though! I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know what's up.

I've been working on a new series of work that is exciting and scary at they same time. I recently participated in a critique session for The Studio Visit sharing some of the developing work. Fortunately, it had a great reception which eases my nerves about it a little bit. This is one of the prepatory sketches for the new work. There are big things in the future! Most definitely some oil paint.

As a little sideline to the new project I was playing around with some of my physical therapy direction sheets and created a new series of work titled "Single Fair" specifically for

Single Fare 2: Please Swipe Again

at Sloan Fine Art in New York.
Exhibition: March 18 to 26, 2011
(there are only a few more days to see this amazing show!)

Single Fare 2 utilized New York Metro cards. The show organizers put up thousands of precious little gems of art on these throwaway cards, some by very well known artists. The press has had a frenzy over the show, including this video shot for Reuters by the organizers. It was a great challenge and fun to participate.

I've also been working like mad in a little sketchbook as part of Transformer Gallery's upcoming Sketch Show. I've been filling the pages with thoughts, visual ideas, and doodles exploring the next steps in my work. Many of them explore the ideas of ability, incorporate the healing sequences of physical therapy that I've been going through over the last year and half, and challenge the usage my left and right hand further.

They caught my eye for more than their size, though a height of five feet – only 2” shorter than the artist, I learned – certainly helped announce them as the tours de force I found them to be."

Exciting new Exhibitions!

Whew!

It's been hopping in the studio lately. The Open Studio went well and many thanks to those that came. I'm getting ready for several shows, one of which opens this week.

I'm super EXCITED about suddenspace. A Pop-Up gallery in 5,000 square feet of raw space featuring 19 of the best emerging artists around. The works in the show are truly incredible and I'm honored to be a part of the show. For the first time ever, I got to see my largest monotypes (5 feet tall and seen below) side by side on display. It was a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. suddenspace has an accompanying website and will have several events for you to attend.

Invitation, Upcoming Exhibitions, & News

It's been a busy couple months with lots of changes! The fall season is in full swing with lots of things coming up to keep me busy. I've been priviledged to start teaching as well. I currently have 5(!) classes and am enjoying every single one of them. Between all my classes my students range in ages from 10 to senior citizens with lots of newly minted adults in the middle. It's a huge change in my day jobs, but something I have whole-heartedly embraced and love.

First things first though, it's time to let everyone in to my studio to see all the work I've been working on. I've been included in several shows and also was convinced to write about my work on something other than an artist statement. You'll find all the information below. I have been asked for quite some time from the editors over at Bourgeon Magazine to write about my work "in my own words." They finally convinced me to do so. You can find the article here.

I can't say it was easy writing about my work in a way that is meant to be anything other than an artist statement. However, I'm glad I did. It gave me a little bit of insight on my own life and work process over the last year and gave me some clarity in the events that have been taking place.

MOMA has an exhibition up of William Kentridge right now. It has a really cool interactive web presence. For someone surfing in bed that can't make it to the exhibition they only make me drool more. You can watch videos, interviews, explore the themes, and get a very good sense of his work. However, if you can make it in person, don't delay.

Re-assessment

Just 32 days ago I had major surgery. I've been recovering at home after 5 days in the hospital. Recovering is a full time job. Managing all the people that are supposed to be helping you and making sure that you get your needs met is hard.

I have tried to do some drawing while I'm laying around recovering. I have to say that it's tough. Frida my hat is off to you. It's very tough, though I'll admit to zoning in front of the tv and Netflix, with some guilt. I'm still on the mend and I'm still trying.

My solo show came down this evening. I want to thank all those that took the trek and went and saw it. I especially want to thank my friends Cory, Megan, and Brad for helping me pack it all up this evening and getting it back to the studio.

DCAC's resident collective considers the artistic process as a mode of inquiry, a domain characterized by sustained research and vigorous experimentation, yet focused less on the production of definitive answers than on the discovery and negotiation of contradictory truths. While the exhibition demonstrates the diverse concerns and creative tactics of the nine Sparkplug members, it also reflects the purposeful development of Sparkplug as a collective over the group's first two years of working together.

Positing art as an ideal vehicle for navigating seemingly irreconcilable ideas and inspirations, and raising questions about the nature of new knowledge and the Artist's Work, FINDINGS brings themes cultivated during collective meetings and studio visits into the gallery space. In this way, the audience is invited to engage in active conversation with individual artists, and with Sparkplug as an organic and multifarious whole.

About Sparkplug
Currently composed of nine DC area artists and curators, the Sparkplug collective meets regularly to discuss their work, explore common concerns, grow their community and dream up creative engagements both in DC and around the world. Through its support of Sparkplug, DC Arts Center provides meeting space, legal and technical resources and exhibition opportunities to emerging artists, curators and arts writers without current gallery representation or institutional employ. Via a continuing dialogue encompassing the theoretical and the practical, the group's members share experiences, perspectives, preoccupations, challenges, and topics informing their ongoing artistic practice.

PUNCH Gallery presents an international juried exhibition taking place December 2009. Located in the Pioneer Square area of downtown Seattle, PUNCH provides an excellent opportunity to gain exposure within the Northwest regional art scene.

Artists from any country may submit work in any medium. There is no limit to the number of entries. In addition to traditional 2-D and 3-D works, artists are encouraged to submit work in new media, video, sound, or installation. Complicated installation procedures may require the artist to assist with installation. Members of PUNCH are not eligible to enter.

The juror, Marisa C. Sánchez, will create an exhibition which presents a diverse range of media and concepts from around the world.

International Arts and Artists' Hillyer Art Space is currently accepting submittals until July 31st, 2009 for its regional artists series of exhibitions beginning January through December 2010.

Requirements:
*Artists must be currently living or working from the Mid Atlantic Region (MD, DE, WV, VA, & DC).
*Artists seeking a solo show at Hillyer must not have been featured in a solo show in DC area within the last 10 years.
*All work to be included in Hillyer Art Spaces shows must have been made in the last 5 years.

Submissions must include the following materials:
*A CD or DVD with up to 10 images, no larger than 5mb each, submitted on a disc as a high resolution 300 dpi JPEGs (do not use GIFs, TIFFs or other formats). Any additional images (over the limit of 10), or any images that do not conform to the guidelines outlined will not be accepted. You may also submit less than 10 images. Image Size - Images can be up to 1920 pixels on the longest side. Do not embed images into PowerPoint. If submitting video limit to 1 minute clips in file formats compatible with Quicktime.

*Label the CD-R with the artist's name, contact information and number of images. Images will be viewed on PCs, not Macs, so CD-Rs must be PC-readable, otherwise they are ineligible.

*File Labeling - Files must be titled with a number indicating the viewingorder, followed by the artist's last name. The numbers must correspond to the accompanying Image List. Use "0" (zero) in front of single digit numbers. Do not use more than 30 characters, and use only letters, numbers, and underscores. Example: 01_Jones; 02_Jones. If using Mac OS 8 or 9, include a ".jpg" extension at the end of each image title. Example: 01_Jones.jpg.

*A complete checklist of works containing the title, year, medium, and dimension of each work.

*Complete artist resume or CV.

*If submitting a group exhibitions proposal - Curatorial statement and artist roster with individual artists' resumes and slide lists for proposed group exhibitions must be submitted.

*Images should clearly depict the work shown.

*Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage and large enough to accommodate your images and any protection for your images if you would like them returned. If SASE is not included in application, images will be discarded after review.

There are approximately 100,000 nonprofit arts organizations, which spend $63.1 billion annually. Without an economic stimulus for the nonprofit arts industry, experts expect about 10% of these organizations (ranging from large arts institutions like museums and orchestras to small community-based organizations in suburban, urban and rural areas) to shut their doors in 2009 – a loss of 260,000 jobs.

According to the Americans for the Arts, a $50 million investment to the National Endowment for the Arts will provide critical funding to save 14,422 jobs from being lost in the U.S. economy. This is based on the ability of the NEA to leverage $7 in additional support through local, state and private donations, for every $1 in NEA support.

Opportunity
Plaza Artist Materials and Pyramid Atlantic are proud to offer a one-month residency opportunity for an artist from the Greater Metropolitan DC Area with an interest in printmaking, papermaking and book arts and whose talent deserves to be recognized.
The Plaza/Pyramid Atlantic Artist Residency is a unique opportunity for an artist to develop a multi-disciplinary arts approach by engaging in the mediums of papermaking, printmaking and bookmaking in the dynamic studios at Pyramid Atlantic. The emphasis at Pyramid Atlantic is on a collaborative approach. While in residence, the artist will receive expert assistance from a Master Printmaker, Papermaker and Book Artist within Pyramid Atlantic’s environment of neutrality, safety and support. At the residencies culmination, the artist will present a public talk about their residency experience and showcase one-of-a-kind works, or limited edition works in paper, print, or artist books created during the residency
Residency
The residency will occur in May of 2009. During their month long residency, the artist will receive:
• $1000 honorarium
• $500 Plaza Gift Card for supplies for their residency activities
• 24-hour access (key provided for duration of residency) and use of
fully equipped studios for papermaking, etching, lithography, relief,
screen-printing, letterpress, and digital printing,
• Storage space
• Basic supplies (solvents, cleaners)
• Inclusion in Pyramid Atlantic’s permanent collection
• Opportunity to show new work in exhibitions
• Public events promotion in the Pyramid Atlantic and Plaza Artist
Materials newsletter
• Opportunity to sell work at the Pyramid Atlantic store

Happy Holidays and next year be even better than this one!

I hope this finds you all well and happy.

It's been a crazy awesome year and much more fruitful than expected. I was able to travel a little, mostly for exhibitions. I was fortunate enough to be curated into some pretty great shows from Cambridge, MA to DC and even celebrated my first New York show this fall at Daneyal Mahmood Gallery with an incredible group of artists. The studio continues to be a joy and I love that fact that its one place in the world where I'm the boss. I'm starting to make more friends in the DC area, though I still miss family and friends a great deal still in the Northwest. I even try to do non-art stuff once in a while, just to take a breather.

I'm looking forward to next year. Last week I received a letter informing me that I was selected as a Keyholder Resident at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. (I get to use the studios and print facilities for 5 whole months without rental fees. I do have to come up with my own materials though.) They only select 4 artists per year. I continue to work with the collective of artists also known as Sparkplug sponsored through DCAC Gallery in DC and was also curated into the Washington Project for the Arts annual auction and gala, which is quite an honor. I'm hoping that these opportunities will take me one step further in the right direction.

I'm headed for the snowbound Northwest for the Christmas holidays for much needed time with family and friends and hope you all have a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

While I am a nervous wreck and excited ball of goo about the shows this week, I have to say I'm even more excited at going home to the Northwest for a few days afterwards.

Its harvest season in wine country and I'm headed home after the show in New York to cook dinner for hungry harvesters at Waving Tree Winery (aka my best friend's winery.) Kimiko's Nebbiolo just got a mention as one of the best 100 wines in the Northwest, which is pretty stiff competition. It should be a great weekend to catch up with friends, get creative in something other than my studio, relax and enjoy a glass or two of that Nebbiolo!

I can't wait to wake up to the sound of the wind in the trees and deer in the pasture and art filled house from all of our friends. Good times. I'll see if I can sneak a few pics of the wide open spaces, unfortunately, I can't capture the fresh air that goes along with it.

The artists highlight their upcoming works of art: Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado; and The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates. The Arkansas River project involves assembling and suspending 5.9 miles of fabric panels horizontally above a 40-mile stretch of the Arkansas River. The Mastaba will be larger than the great pyramid at Giza and will comprise 410,000 steel oil barrels, stacked on their sides and painted in bright colors for a mosaic-like effect in changing light. Following the lecture, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will sign copies of their book, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado.

Presented in the Sant Auditorium; included in museum admission.

'The Meat Show'
This is what you call raw art: Heide Hatry, the daughter of a Bavarian pig farmer and an artist who once wallpapered a room with a porker's skin, has assembled a wild survey of the meanings of meat. Central to the show are Carolee Schneemann's notorious sex-with-chickens dance orgy from 1964, Meat Joy, and Zhang Huan's stroll through Manhattan in a muscled costume of dark-red beef. Other trenchant works include Tamara Kostianovsky's sirloin mimicry with fabric, Jenny Walton's painting of an oozing wound, and Betty Hirst's figures carved from frozen roast, which bleed as they thaw. The opening was fabulous and I was fortunate to be able to attend. There were a lot of people in attendance. I'm not sure if they came for the idea of spectacle the show presented, but I'm certainly hoping they came away with a much deeper understanding of the relationship between artist and subject.

I spoke with the director of Pierre Menard last week and they are extending the show's schedule in Cambridge through this month, so you may still have some time to go check it out. I have to say it is a true pleasure to be showing with the other artists in the show.

Meat meets art in Cambridge gallery

The title of the art show at the Pierre Menard Gallery raises a lot of questions, and even fewer answers, which may be a good thing for the artists of the “Meat After Meat Joy” exhibition.

The 10 artists whose works decorate the exhibit, which opened Saturday, used animal meat as a medium in some form or another.

Some artists used meat as an actual tool to create their art — Zuang Huan filmed himself walking around New York City in a body suit made of meat — while others, like David Raymond, used meat as their subject matter.

“[Meat] struck me as having visual properties I had not explored,” said Raymond, whose paintings are featured in the show. “I was more interested in treating it like a post-life subject and began to use butcher cuts of meats — rib roast, pork chops, steaks — which struck me as something as a commoditization as a designed object meant for sale, meant to at first, attract someone for sale. I found that an interesting angle worth investigating.”

Raymond began working with meat intensely in 1990 when he noticed a piece of chuck steak.

“Up close, it looked like a piece of geography,” Raymond said. “If you think about the nature of organic things, they share properties, it’s that organic-ness, that soft-growth pattern of things. Now, they’re altered by someone making a cut or shape, like a road cutting through the earth.”

Visitors to the gallery can examine a flag made of pure raw meat and meat fat.

The flag’s sculptor, Betty Hirst, also produced an opened book made of frozen raw meat and, possibly disturbing, a baby girl on a pink blanket composed of dried meat.

The show’s curator and fellow meat artist, Heide Hatry, grew up on a pig farm and said for her, meat is a “primordial fact of life, even if it is a highly problematic one.”

Hatry said the show, entitled, “Meat After Meat Joy,” hails from a performance by Carolee Schneeman in the 1960s.
The show consisted of “scantily” dressed people “writhing and interacting” among dead animals and animal parts — the show, in some part seemed to be a celebration of life as the tone was joyous even though life ultimately results in death. The show also acted as a statement that people “embrace the forces of destruction.”

While Raymond’s exploration into the visual aspects of meat is not meant to be a political statement on the treatment of animals — Raymond does eat meat, although he finds the treatment of animals for slaughter disturbing — for some, the work displayed in “Meat After Meat Joy” will definitely raise those questions.

“We hope that this exhibit causes people to stop and think about the experience inflicted on millions of chickens, lambs, pigs, cows and other animals every day — and consider stopping this cycle of violence by trying a humane vegetarian diet,” said David Perle, spokesman for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization.

Nathan Censullo, who works at the gallery, insisted the works were not meant to be statements on the audience’s dietary habits.

“I don’t necessarily think this has anything to do with making a commentary on people’s diets,” Censullo said. “It’s a bunch of people looking at the same material and finding value for what they want to do. That’s sort of the interesting thing — it’s a bizarre, weird activity. There’s not a whole lot of people that are doing this. Not that this hasn’t been done before, but that doesn’t matter, it’s what we’re doing now.”

Skin is the body's largest organ and greatest protection. It is the body's most public point of vulnerability and private realm of pleasure. Flesh is associated with the body; it cannot be separated from the body except when it is torn, crucified, burned, flayed. Muscle and fat are anatomy, as well as the fit body, the football body, the anorectic body, the fat body.

Meat is the body without skin. It has no identity. Meat cannot have a mood, cannot feel, nor have an intention. It cannot die or even remember having been killed. It is not a metaphor but matter. Meat cannot have a soul. When a suicide bomber blows up a wedding, a funeral, a café creating sprawling mass of bloody, fleshy, skinless, blobs and chunks human beings and animal are turned into meat. In William Gibson's Neuromancer (1984), when Cases's body is unhooked from the computer and no longer jacked into cyberspace, it becomes "meat". Meat has no notion of being-in-the-world.

And yet, an exhibition on meat seems like an obvious continuation of discussions of contemporary art and the body. Certainly in relation to feminism, meat has been an erotic and eschatological component of a liberatory, transgressive discourse of female sexuality and the body beginning with Carolee Schneemann's path-breaking 1964 Meat Joy. After Meat Joy, the female body was no longer the 'poulet" or chick but an erotic and political force of the laugh of the Medusa (Helene Cixous) — the writhing ecstatic female body freed from the constraints of patriarchal definition (meat is the indefinable flesh) that expresses an epistemology (Interior Scroll 1975) into ontology (the feminist movement). In Meat Joy, although controversial, raw meat — animal human — and the human body are at their most uncontested and merged, for meat is not the absence or the other the body but an act of reclamation and affirmation of all that patriarchy had previously "disemboweled" from the female body.

But what kind of commentary about being and the body is Zuang Huan's Meat Suit within the context of the body as meat of the suicide bomber? Both amusing and terrifying; beautiful and nauseating — Meat Suit is both super hero and carcass; literal description of the body as meat as well as explosive metaphor of the body as raw meat in the age of virtual reality and suicide bombing. Then again, what is Betty Hirst's crowned circumcised sushi penis asking of meat and the body in Penis. It calls up the penis of the female to male transsexual, a limb fashioned out of skin and muscle from other parts of the body. It signifies raw humor (literally skinning the phallus), and raw critique as it juxtaposes the skin of a body with the skinless shape, the act of sculpting and photographing, playing this skinless dick to the anonymous white skinned body on which it lays. But the body is never there in any of these interpretations – only the raw meat that has been carved(?) sewn(?) rolled(?) into this representation of the phallus which, for psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, was never the penis, but the Grand Signifier.

Background information:

Curator Heide Hatry is a painter, sculptor, photographer and performance artist, who has also been trained as a printer, art historian and rare bookseller. She curated the exhibition entitled SKIN, in which she assembled work by seven woman artists, whose primary subject, and in some cases, medium, is skin. The show was mounted at the Heidelberger Kunstverein, the Goethe Institute in New York, and several commercial galleries. She also published the book Skin, several catalogs for artists including Carolee Schneemann and is currently working on a book about portraits, as well as completing the exhibition catalog for Meat After Meat Joy. The Pierre Menard Gallery was founded in 2006 by John Wronoski, proprietor of the well-known international rare book firm, Lame Duck Books (founded 1984). In its first year, the gallery mounted an exhausting 17 shows. The gallery's space allows for multiple simultaneous exhibitions. I have some exciting news to share with you. The Baltimore Sculpture
Project has invited my project 7,000 Evergreens to be part of its
2008-2009 show, which will open July 17 and remain open through May
2009. The Baltimore Sculpture Project is a public sculpture show in
downtown Baltimore, so we are thrilled to have the opportunity to gain
exposure for our project and further explore the creative
possibilities for artificial trees in the landscape.

The 7,000 Evergreens project will install a forest of artificial
evergreen trees for the Baltimore show, and we are currently seeking
donations of unwanted plastic Christmas trees and other artificial
evergreens. We will accept trees of all colors, sizes, shapes and
varieties. If you have a tree that you would like to donate, or if
you know someone who does, please contact me to arrange pickup or
delivery of the tree.

DC Arts Center's resident collective Sparkplug launches its first exhibition as part of an ongoing pursuit of adventures beyond the commercial gallery system. Sparkplug is a gathering of a dozen or so Washington, DC metro area emerging artists, curators and writers that meet once a month to discuss their work, explore common concerns and ideas, grow their community, and dream up creative engagements both in DC and around the globe.

This inaugural two-week catalyst show will include work by: Deborah Carroll Anzinger, Peter Gordon, Lisa McCarty, Kathryn McDonnell, Michael Matason, Mark Planisek, Karen Joan Topping and Jenny Walton. What began as a collaborative pooling of images for submission to the rash of art slideshow presentations (popping up at venues all over the country) has morphed into a full blown installation of artworks; an investigation and discovery of entropy, place and system in the Nation's Capital. The goal of Sparkplug is to identify superior artists, curators and arts writers without current gallery representation or institutional employ, to provide them with an ongoing source of support, inspiration and encouragement, and to enlist them in the long-term development of a vital DC Arts Center collective. Sparkplug is still actively seeking members - dedicated visionaries with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences and a diversity of professional preoccupations and creative aspirations - from all communities in the Washington, DC region.

Some of the artists will be on hand on Saturday, May 10th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM to discuss the show, their work, and Sparkplug at the DC Arts Center.

There has been an incredible amount of change in the last few weeks. Currently I'm working approximately 70 hours a week tidying up the two jobs I'm leaving and preparing for the one I'm taking. My new position at International Arts and Artists is very interesting and I'm excited about the possibilities. Though I'm very sad to be leaving my current jobs, I do hope to stay in touch with the friends I work with and continue to see what is happening in their lives.

I'll be moving into my studio this weekend, which I'm looking forward to. As soon as my crazy work schedule eases up, I'll be spending a great deal of time over there creating my heart out. I'm looking forward to getting into the process of painting again. I'm not sure I'll be able to pour for a while due to weather limitations, but will certainly be working on the portraits promised to Mom and Dad for Christmas. . .

Hi all!

I needed to write this after the insistence of my best friend Kimiko. You can blame her for the novel to follow....

Just have to say what a topsy turvy life!

In the last year (2007) I have finished graduate school. Which is no small feat, I must say. I changed my art work entirely a week before the thesis show and also developed it much further at a residency program in upstate New York. I thought that those two things were the difficult parts. Oh, was I wrong.

It was when I was leaving my residency that life got more interesting. I suddenly realized I didn't really have an address, other than where my parents collected my mail for me in Washington State. I wanted to go back to the DC area, but was unsure of how that was going to happen with no money and no job. The week of August 18th held a lot of highs for me. I got my old job back, thanks to one of the best bosses that I've ever had. He called me and asked for me to come back (still part time) after my replacement up and quit, and I sold several of my paintings. Between these two financial boons, I was able to head my car tentatively in the direction of DC. I was able to find a pet sitting gig for a couple weeks and headed straight there from New York. I started pounding the streets for a full time job in hopes of being able to find more permanent housing. From the pet sitting gig I found a great, if not just a little too decrepit sub lease in the Dupont Circle area of DC for a month.

Then it was on to more searching for jobs and houses. I found another pet sitting gig, but it was really more being an actual pet nanny. All I'm going to say if you have to have a pet nanny, you have too many pets. But, it was a decent neighborhood, I got to walk dogs everyday, and the rent was decently cheap for the interim period of a part time budget. I won't say that the demands of sometimes at least 14 animals, most with special needs and better food that I could feed myself, didn't bother me, even though I had animals as a kid.

In desperation I started searching not just the art related jobs but also the secretarial job sections and managed to come up with an arts administration position working as an office manager in a literary non profit. It was great to have benefits and a full time job, but being a non-profit, I still had to keep the part time job as well to keep up. Once things started looking better financially I found a house in the Maryland suburbs of DC with some pretty great roommates. Its about a 20 minute (5 mile) drive to work in the mornings.

I even had a studio practically land in my lap. I've been working with a collective artists through a contact at my residency, and happened upon one of the fellow artists minutes after they gave up their lease on their studio. For those that don't know, finding an affordable studio space is like winning the lottery here in DC. I get to move in to my first professional studio on the 1st of February. I'm truly excited about it.

So...then things got even more interesting in the last week. From my plastering of resumes in August, I got a call from another non-profit that wanted to interview me. I decided that I would at least keep my interview skills honed, as some things at my full time job were becoming increasingly frustrating. So after finally getting a hold of the contact there I had one day to prepare for the interview. I desperately tried to find a place to get my hair cut at 7 pm that wouldn't sweep a Franklin out with my hair, but couldn't do it. It was then plan B to go buy a straightener and some humidity balm so I at least didn't look like I had a crows nest on my head. Well that didn't work so well. We had a big snow storm the day of the interview, so I actually walked in the office after thinking I would be late because traffic was literally going 4 mph, with a miniature snowman on my head! By the time I looked at myself in the mirror several hours later, I thought if I got a call back, it certainly wasn't due to my appearance. It was frightening! That was Thursday.

Friday I went into work and thought, "CRAP!" Especially after having a golden carrot dangled in front of me the previous day. I got a call at lunch time to clarify some questions from the Executive Assistant and by 6:30 on Friday, I had my first offer. By 7:30 I had my second offer as I was sitting down eating some of the best fish and chips around with my roommates. I thought I was going to be able to make the switch until I woke up at 4 am with night sweats that it just wasn't right and started crunching the numbers. I would have had to give up my new studio that was a dream come true and take a pretty big cut in my current earnings. Who knew how much a part time job could bring in?!

So.. I turned it down after having breakfast with a good friend who was there to support me saying no. It hurt. A LOT. Though they understood and said I couldn't give up my studio, it still hurt to say no. Saturday was spent in a big funk and even bigger when I had to go to to work and realize I was staying. While at work, I got another call. This time with something better that the full time job, but less than the two jobs I have put together. I was really excited. This guy really believes in me, not to mention he doesn't really take no for an answer. I kinda like that. After interviewing with him, he's got big plans and the drive to get there.

So Sunday after making a freezing cold, standing in line at #15 for an hour, sprinting to the last three rooms, and standing staring at Edward Hopper's Sun in an Empty room for 20 minutes before the THOUSANDS of people got there and made it impossible to see anything, I called my new boss, and said yes. Going to the Edward Hopper exhibit and literally seeing thousands of people standing in line wrapping every which way and out the doors to see art work helps me understand the power of art and why its important not just as an artist, but also to the public.

So after I turned down the dream job, they fortunately believe in me enough that they came back with an offer that I could accept financially. Thank goodness! So, I'll be handing in my resignation tomorrow. Its going to be incredibly hard and I hope wonderful new job that I can actually say is a career as well and not just a day job. I will be working with a visual arts non profit that promotes visual art and cross cultural understanding through art all over the world, AND they also promote and help local artists as well. Awesome! So for the next couple weeks I'm going to be working three separate jobs, the two I'll be leaving and the one I'll be training for.

Hey all,

The latest spot I've landed is the Washington DC metro area. Its a place that I'm
gettting to know slowly. Its an interesting mixture of hip no money and old world crusty old money. I'm hoping to find a comfort somewhere in between.

I've chosen to stay here for a few years at least, give it a go, and try to find some success (terms and parameters as yet to be defined) then move home to deserts and mountains, rain or no, and wine country no less. I do miss seeing a distant horizon line. But there are lots of things to offer here as well.

So.. thats the status of things.

Hello all,

Just an fyi that between my 4 jobs after graduation, the one most important an only non-paying being an artist somehow has taken a small backseat for the need of cash and housing. So in the meantime, I've procured two jobs (well one really, cause my old job was given back to me) and a pet nanny position. Its been interesting and I'm working about 60 or more hours a week between pets and being an office manager.

It all puts being an artist and being given the time this summer to create into perspective. It was an amazing gift. Because now I realize how little time there is with all of the other stuff crowding in for time. Granted my finances took a serious hit by doing so, but I had one last hurrah for my thesis work, which was much needed. I'm now starting to get back on my financial feet, slowly and surely. There is still a lot of worry on how I'm going to pay for everything, but I think there is relief in sight.

I'm excited to be moving into a new place this week which will eliminate the pet nanny position. I thought I used to like pets until I lived with at times 10 cats and 5 dogs and 2 intense pet owners. But holy crap!, and lots of it too. when you've already worked a 10 hour day (or more) the last thing you want to do is come home and deal with pet crap, literally. I didn't know that people could honestly converse about pet crap for over 20 minutes with complete seriousness. Really I didn't. At some point the lunacy should have crept in and added some levity. I've been requested by several people to writer about my pet nanny position, but I think there needs to be some time away from it to be able to really appreciate it.

So now I'll be down to 50 hours a week and trying to create in the other waking hours. Wish me luck!

Well,

Its been a helluva ride thus far. Tonight is the big celebration of 2 years of hard work. I'm planning on celebrating BIG!!!!

The last several weeks have been crazy and at time I almost think someone should have commited me. Unlike most of my counterparts who have been planning what they were going to display in our thesis show, I changed my entire body of work and created everything a week before the show went up. So for those that received my postcard...that painting isn't even in the Museum. Everything is brand spanking new. Its also been a parade of critics, curators, and gallerists, and collectors through our studios and the show, so cross your fingers for me!

I was awarded the Jo-Anne Crisp Ellert Award for Excellence along with my roomate from Rome, Becca. I think we were both floored and flattered by the recognition. As well as I received a Mellon Grant from the University for the preparation of my thesis show. Plans after this include visiting family and friends for a few weeks then heading to upstate New York for the Summer for the Chautauqua School of Art residency program where I have been given a scholarship to attend. I'm hoping to develop that shiny new body of work there.

So...the suitcases can't be burned yet. I'm still gonna be a travelling fool, but at this point, I think I'm ready for the next adventure! Hope this finds everyone happy, well, and enjoying life!

Hey there!

So this adventure of graduate school is coming to a close in just a few short weeks. Its hard to believe these two years have passed by so fast and what an adventure!!!!

I'm including some of the images that I have been working with. I hope you enjoy. As you can see the latest, the sculptural wall piece is a big leap. Its a new and scary direction, but feel ultimately more comfortable, not to mention much more fun! (The middle one "Disappearance of Constraint" has recently been chosen to appear on the cover of a book of poetry. I'm currently working with the author and the publisher and will have more details later for all.)

My thesis show will be April 21 - May 27. The opening is May 5. I will also be in a group show in Alexandria, Virginia called Art-o-matic at the same time. More details for that soon.

As far as plans after grad school? I have no clue really, its the first time in a long time I don't have a plan and in many respects, it feels good. There are a lot of possibilities I'm currently exploring so we'll see where that leads.

So,

I really haven't dropped off of the face of the earth. I'm still in grad school in Washington DC. I will graduate in May. (It doesn't seem as if it has been two years). My thesis exhibition will open the on April 18th and run through May 13th. Right now I'm re-learning how to have fun with paint (who know it wasn't supposed to be completely serious???) through assistant teaching non-art majors.

I was able to go home for the holidays and enjoyed seeing my family, new niece, and some friends. For those that I didn't see, I'm so sorry. It doesn't mean I still don't think of you often. While home, I had knee surgery on my left knee with very hopeful results. Right now I'm in the healing process and visiting the physical therapist often. But progress is steady and I am getting around pretty well now. Not to mention, it gave me some more "material" for my thesis.

I'm enjoying my job at the marketing firm and learning alot about small businesses. We are doing alot of work for non-profits that are trying to help the world out. It helps me feel balanced and that my world is not completely consumed by art. At this point, I've been offered a job after graduation with the firm and am seriously considering it. I'm a little tired of schlepping my suitcases around the world and it would be nice to stay in one place long enough to see if I like it or not. I'll be researching all of my options in the next few months and trying to decide what life after grad school will be like for me. I'll likely be going to the College Art Association conference in New York in February, where I hope a clearer picture of what is available for jobs arises.

Well, I suppose the painting I'm working on is dry enough, so I better get back to working. I hope you are all doing well. I would love to hear from you.

They neighbors argue way too much, really to the point of ridiculousness. The cops constantly are swarming the neighborhood, but are never around when you actually need them. See attached picture of neighbors house. You'll understand. Not to mention, living in a place that is nicknamed the "virgin vault" and is stuck in the early 20th century isn't exactly helping either.... So. I'm moving. Actually, it's all about the extra sleep I'm going to get from being 2 blocks from work and not commuting an hour a day.....

Hi all,

It's recently been brought to my attention that its has been too long between mass emails. First, I hope this finds everyone prosperous and content.

So, What have I been up to lately. In the words of Monet, "Im not performing miracles, I'm using up and wasting a lot of paint...". I'm including two pictures of works IN PROGRESS, to demonstrate. Some of you will recognize this a huge departure from my work prior to graduate school. However, it seems to be much easier to work on and deal with. Its something that I know more intimately than any of my previous work. Something that I feel I can speak with passion on in my paintings. They are both over 5 feet in lenght/height.

I flew to Boston this last weekend to see a show that I thought might help inform my current work. Not only did I make a contact for myself with the gallery (which is two blocks from Harvard and has connections to galleries in New York) but I also was able to meet the artist of the show and schedule a studio visit in New York with her in order to help me understand my work better. This is not your normal gallery experience, I assure you. These amazing opportunities still amaze me. Not only that I got a signed working copy of her book to boot!

I am currently under application also to move into an apartment. I found one that is much closer to work (2 blocks walking vs 45 min commute) that will allow me more time in my day and the ability to finally cook! I'm starting to go into kitchen withdrawals, and its really not a pretty picture. It is also a place that I feel like I can call "home" for a while and not continually be living out of my suitcases as I have done for the last year and half. I'm really sick of my suitcases at this point.

My job is going really well for the marketing firm. I have been offered a full time position after I graduate. It definately gives me a little more breathing room when May comes and an I have to face life after grad school. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but as long as I'm painting, I can be satisfied.

Anyways, that is the long and short of me lately...How about you? I'd love to hear how everyone is doing...

Hi all,

Sorry for the mass email, but it seems my time is eaten by the studio. I'm trying slowly to get to everyone. I'm usually leaving for work around 8 in the morning and getting home past 11pm from the studio. Work at the marketing firm is going well and is offering a good break from the constant studio practice.

I just wanted to send a little update. I'm doing well. I'm alive. And I really am very happy with my decision to come to DC early. My studio is gorgeous. I want to be here. I want to be creating. Its amazing what happens when someone feels comfortable in their own environment. I'm really starting to make some good friends. There have been some great laughs so far and the air around here is much lighter than in my previous year.

My current work is well on its way. I've got my first group crit in 2 weeks and I'm trying very hard to get several pieces ready for it. My scale has taken a huge leap and I'm working right now on 4 pieces that excede my arm span.

I am managing to get out and see the city a little on Sunday's. Its what we call SundayFunday. It helps us get some perspective and see a museum and maybe explore a new neighborhood together. Anyways, things are going well here. How are they going where you are?
